MIH 8-Year-Old — Sensitivity & Appearance: ADC OSCE practice station

An ADC-style practice station on OSCE Coach. Practice, not real, past or recalled exam content.

What the candidate is told

8-year-old child, attending with mother. Chief Complaint: Mother reports sensitivity in tooth 26 (upper left first permanent molar). She is also concerned about the appearance of the child's front teeth. Examination Findings / Clinical Images: Image 1: Tooth 26 with a well-demarcated yellow-brown opacity and post-eruptive enamel breakdown on the occlusal surface. Image 2: Upper permanent incisors showing creamy-white to yellow opacities with sharp borders against adjacent normal enamel, distributed asymmetrically — 11 and 21 affected, 12 and 22 largely spared. The remaining erupted permanent teeth are unaffected and the primary dentition is sound. Task: Explain the diagnosis to the mother, including the differential diagnoses you have considered and excluded. Address both of her concerns — the sensitivity in tooth 26 and the appearance of the front teeth — and discuss management options for each.

How to approach paediatric dentistry stations

Paediatric stations involve both a child and a parent. Practise age-appropriate language for the child, clear information for the parent, and behaviour guidance that keeps everyone comfortable.

Whatever the topic, the same habits earn marks: signpost what you will cover, listen, explain in plain words, offer real options, and check understanding. Our guide to the communication criteria shows how: ADC communication marking criteria, explained.
