Ballarat leaves the most: A$51,113 a yearTap Compare on a card

A rough picture, not a quote. Income is a national figure scaled by days, not a town-specific one, so towns with lower rent come out ahead. Tax assumes an Australian resident and ignores HELP debt, super, offsets, visa costs and the Medicare levy surcharge. The partner income, professional costs, living costs and bedroom adjustments are assumptions. Community notes are general impressions, not census data.

Rent data and sources

The cards above size rent to your household (for example about 75% of the median for a one-bedroom). This table shows the published median before that adjustment. Rents come from different public reports with different methods, so each is graded. A recent and reputable, B a single recent source, C rough, older or sources disagree.

Income figures

  • Average wage or salary dentist: A$108,448. National. Includes part-timers, so full-time pay is higher. Source: ATO occupation data 2023-24 (code 252312), as reported by a third-party calculator.
  • Median dentist taxable income: A$131,588. National. Includes part-timers and practice owners. Source: ATO occupation data 2023-24.
  • Average dentist taxable income: A$162,722. National. Pulled up by practice owners. Source: ATO occupation data 2023-24.
  • Rural or remote package (recruiter quoted): A$180,000. Low end of the A$180k to A$280k quoted for experienced dentists. Marketing figure, not audited. Source: Recruitment guide.

Tax uses 2026-27 Australian resident rates plus the 2% Medicare levy. Living costs (A$450 a week for one adult, scaled for partners and children with a standard scale) and the rent adjustment for household size are assumptions: change them to match your life.

Children: childcare and school

  • Childcare: national average centre-based fees were about A$14.40 an hour in late 2025 (Department of Education figures reported by providers), so about A$144 for a 10-hour day, and about A$168 in parts of Sydney in the March quarter 2026. We start at A$150 a day.
  • Child Care Subsidy: the person claiming (or their partner) generally needs to be a citizen, permanent resident or hold a few specific visas. Most temporary skilled visas, such as the 482, are not on the list, so these families usually pay the full fee. Confirm your visa with Services Australia (136 150).
  • School fees: permanent residents and citizens attend public schools free. Many states charge temporary visa holders: roughly A$5,600 a child in NSW, A$4,000 a family in WA, up to about A$6,700 a child in SA, while Victoria and the NT are reported as exempt and Queensland, Tasmania and the ACT vary. Sources for these disagree, so check the state education department.

Frequently asked questions

How much do dentists earn in Australia?

National ATO data for 2023-24 shows an average dentist taxable income of about A$162,700 and a median of about A$131,600. These include part-time dentists and practice owners, so they are not a full-time salary. Pay varies a lot by location, days worked and whether you are an associate or an owner.

Is it cheaper to live and practise in a regional town?

Rent is often lower in regional centres than in Sydney or Perth, and some regional and remote packages are quoted higher than city pay. But towns differ widely, some mining and remote towns are expensive, and rent data for small towns is patchy. Use the calculator with your own offer and your own costs.

How accurate is this calculator?

It is an indicative estimate. Rent figures come from public reports with different methods and dates, each graded for confidence. Tax uses 2026-27 resident rates. It ignores HELP debt, superannuation, offsets and many personal factors.

How much does childcare cost for a dentist's family in Australia?

Centre-based day care averages roughly A$140 to A$170 for a 10-hour day before any subsidy. Most temporary skilled visa holders are not eligible for the Child Care Subsidy, so they typically pay the full fee. Permanent residents and citizens can get a subsidy that depends on family income. School fees also vary by state for children of temporary visa holders.
