Uncontrolled Diabetes patient with periodontitis: ADC OSCE practice station

An ADC-style practice station on OSCE Coach. Practice, not real, past or recalled exam content.

What the candidate is told

Mrs Lima, 48, a regular attender, presents complaining of bleeding gums while brushing and sensitivity to cold. Her last dental visit was 6 months ago, when a clean was done and the dentist told her she had mild gingivitis; that dentist used an electric brush to clean her teeth. Today you have examined her, completed periodontal charting given (lot of areas with 4 -5 mm pockets), and diagnosed generalised moderate periodontitis; you have also taken an OPG. Her medical records show she is Type II diabetic. She is a smoker, 10 cigarettes/day. Task: manage her concerns and explain your treatment plan.

How to approach periodontics stations

Periodontal stations reward a clear, jargon-free explanation of what is happening in the gums, the link to risk factors such as smoking and diabetes, and an honest plan that keeps the patient involved. Practise explaining probing depths and bone loss in everyday words.

Whatever the topic, the same habits earn marks: signpost what you will cover, listen, explain in plain words, offer real options, and check understanding. Our guide to the communication criteria shows how: ADC communication marking criteria, explained.
