Uncontrolled Diabetic Patient with cellulitis: ADC OSCE practice station

An ADC-style practice station on OSCE Coach. Practice, not real, past or recalled exam content.

What the candidate is told

Mr Hiess is a 47 year old new patient in your clinic, complaining of severe pain and facial swelling related to his upper right side for past 3/4 days. He went to see GP before; he gave him antibiotics but it didn't seem to work so GP referred him to see you Examination reveals that the upper right first molar is badly carious and beyond restoration, and now it is indicated for removal.. Swelling is still there, and he is in a lot of pain. His medical record shows that he has diabetes. How would you plan his management and gain consent for his treatment plan and discuss possible complications that may happen?

How to approach periodontics stations

Periodontal stations reward a clear, jargon-free explanation of what is happening in the gums, the link to risk factors such as smoking and diabetes, and an honest plan that keeps the patient involved. Practise explaining probing depths and bone loss in everyday words.

Whatever the topic, the same habits earn marks: signpost what you will cover, listen, explain in plain words, offer real options, and check understanding. Our guide to the communication criteria shows how: ADC communication marking criteria, explained.
