What the candidate is told

Mrs Joshi is a regular patient at your clinic. You removed her upper left first molar (26) which was badly carious on Monday afternoon and today is Friday afternoon and she booked an emergency appointment, complaining about pain, swelling and bad breath which started 2 days after tooth was removed. After examining her mouth, you are suspecting it's a post-surgical infection. Manage patient's condition, explain the reason and further investigation that needs to be done. MH: Allergic to penicillin.

How to approach oral surgery stations

Oral surgery stations test consent, risk explanation and aftercare. Practise covering the benefits, material risks, alternatives and what to expect afterwards, then checking the patient has understood.

Whatever the topic, the same habits earn marks: signpost what you will cover, listen, explain in plain words, offer real options, and check understanding. Our guide to the communication criteria shows how: ADC communication marking criteria, explained.
